Joy Rose Fisher, a 75 years long resident of Wheeler County, died in her sleep April 11, 2018 in her home in Fossil. She was born to George F Taylor and Alta Mathews Taylor on November 12, 1922 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, attending Girls Poly High School before coming to Wheeler County.
She played the violin and piano. Her many enjoyments were sewing, carpentry, gardening, farming, nurturing bummer lambs, calves, chicks and turkeys. She liked to fish in Lake Creek and other small creeks, maybe some times she opened the season a little early to get ahead of the poachers.
While at the ranch, she gathered many grains and grasses, sewed clothes to enter in the county fair for many blue ribbons. Before the county road was graveled, she would put her little son in the bucket of the ford tractor and drove five miles through the mud out to the highway where the truck was parked in the winter to go to town to get the mail and groceries. She sold cream to the creamery in Heppner, leaving the cream can by the highway for the stage to pick up and deliver to Heppner.
She was a great mother and aunt to many. She taught many lessons to all of us. She found comfort in the Bible and was baptized in the river near Clarno a few years ago. Grandma will be missed for all the great times around the table and stories she told us about her life in Wheeler County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 29 years Yuba Seitz, husbands; Ken Ellis and Dwight Fisher, sisters; Ruth Roper and Hannah George. She is survived by her son Donald Seitz, and his wife Virginia, grandchildren; Shelley Seitz, Elliott Seitz and William Wendel Seitz, great grandchildren; Anthony Mark and Alexandria June Rose Seitz.
Funeral service for Joy will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at the Fossil United Methodist Church, followed by internment at the Fossil I.O.O.F Cemetery. A potluck meal will then be served back at the church.
Memorial contributions for those who wish may be made to Haven House Retirement Center, PO Box 386, Fossil, Oregon 97830 or to Asher Community Health Center, PO Box 307, Fossil, Oregon 97830.
